Maintenance Operator I – Water Division

Full Time, Non-Exempt, Union

NATURE OF WORK

Under the direction of the Water Foreman, or crew leader, the Maintenance Operator I is responsible to perform a variety of general labor duties such as water main break repairs, water service line repairs, fire hydrant operation and repairs, removal and replacement of asphalt and concrete materials, landscaping, snow and ice control, and a variety of other miscellaneous duties.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED equivalent (required), Associates Degree (Desired).
Valid CDL Class A driver’s license with tank endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Minimum one year experience as MOT at the Village of Deerfield or three years’ experience in a related field of work.

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with overtime as needed. Hours will vary and applicant must be flexible.

STARTING SALARY & BENEFITS:  Position and salary will be dependent on years of experience.

Maintenance Operator Trainee – Requires 1 year of experience, $65,788 - $81,271

Maintenance Operator I – Requires 3 years of experience, $77,248 - $95,421

$2,500 signing bonus for new hire who currently possesses a valid CDL Class A Driver’s License with airbrake and tanker endorsement. 

This is a full-time, non-exempt position is in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Read water meters and record consumption of water.
• Inspect meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections.
• Investigate customer complaints and communicate resolutions.
• Repair underground water mains and service lines.
• Repair asphalt, concrete and landscaping caused by distribution system work.
• Install and repair fire hydrants.
• Trash removal and pick up from various village trashcan locations, roadways, etc.
• Assist in leaf removal operation.
• Plow snow, salt streets, and shovel sidewalks during snow removal operations.
• Retrieve deceased animals.
• Clean and wash equipment regularly.
• Operate concrete saws, sledgehammers, air hammers, large trucks and equipment.
• Work within confined spaces; from 5 ft to 25 ft below ground for extended periods.

OTHER DUTIES

• May be required to perform overtime work as requested or required, including weekends.
• Provide polite customer service to residents.
• Follow all Village safety policies and procedures.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to perform physically strenuous tasks such as lifting or shoveling.
• Ability to enter confined spaces safely and for long periods including valve vaults and other structures.
• Ability to enter and perform work in wet wells, valve vaults or other structures.
• Ability to climb ladders, shovel, and lift material and equipment up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to use power tools.
• Subject to high levels of noise for an extended period of time.
• Subject to extremes of temperature for prolonged periods or abrupt changes in temperature.
• Subject to fumes and disagreeable odors.
• Subject to working in wet, dirty, dusty, hot, humid, and/or cold conditions in high vehicle traffic areas.
• Subject to working for extended periods - 12 hours normally and 18 hours infrequently for several consecutive days.
• Frequent and/or prolonged bending, stooping, standing, sitting, pulling, pushing, or reaching.
