What You Will Do
- Assist with tree planting, mowing grass, hedge trimming, and the removal of dead, damaged, or unwanted trees using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Plant flowers, trees, and shrubs; water lawns and landscaped areas to maintain healthy grounds.
- Weed, mulch, and apply fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals to promote growth and prevent weeds, disease, or insect infestation.
- Perform snow and ice removal from roads, sidewalks, stairs, ramps, and parking lots using proper equipment and tools.
- Move furniture, materials, and large equipment to support departmental operations and other crafts as needed.
- Operate barricades, signs, and power washers for outdoor cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Perform additional duties that support the department's mission and goals as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or combination totaling six (6) months from the categories below:- Coursework or vocational training in horticulture, landscaping, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:- Fifteen (15) semester hours equals six (6) months
 
- Work experience in grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, nursery, agriculture work, grounds construction, and/or tending to lawns, turfs, trees, flowers, bushes or other shrubberies, ornamental plants, and other grounds-related work.
 
- Coursework or vocational training in horticulture, landscaping, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- Valid/current driver's license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicles(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
Preferred Qualifications
-Ability to perform general physical activities required by the job, which include but are not limited to, the following: lifting, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, carrying heavy loads, normal hearing, sight, and speaking abilities, hand-eye coordination, grasping, bending, writing, walking, and driving.
-Ability to follow simple instructions.
-Ability and willingness to work as directed.
-Attention to detail.
-Basic knowledge of machines and tools commonly used.
-Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
-Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points.
