POSITION SUMMARY
This is skilled technical and manual work on the sub transmission system, primary and secondary distribution system, street lighting system, and fiber optics communication system.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Crew leader and the Manager of Electric Operations.
This position is a full-time on-site position reporting to the City of Batavia's Public Works building. A typical work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00AM-3:30PM. Schedule subject to change based on operational needs.
Successful candidates will be capable of performing a variety of physical tasks in all types of weather and will be available to respond to emergencies on days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays on a 7/24/365 basis.
Starting salary pay is $66.34 an hour or the equivalent of $137,996.78 annually. This position is covered under the IBEW Local #196 (Electric) collective bargaining agreement and is classified as non-exempt, with excellent benefits.
Employees covered by this agreement are required to reside within 16 miles of the Batavia city limits within one year of employment with the City and assignment to the Electric Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs all necessary work related to the maintenance, extension, improvement, or operation of the electric utility as proposed by the Manager of Electric Operations.
Performs electric utility maintenance and construction including the laying of underground cable, fiber optic cable, and the repair and installation of overhead lines.
Installs electric utility and street lighting components; conducts tests of cables, lines, and other parts of the system.
Properly operates equipment and participates in its proper maintenance.
Performs all work safely and with a high awareness of the safety of fellow workers.
Is available for after hour call outs and for emergencies or scheduled work on the weekends.
Maintains or develops the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to continue to work in a safe and effective manner.
Provides effective and efficient customer services; promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school (or GED) supplemented by the completion of an approved apprenticeship program; considerable working experience on overhead and underground primary and secondary electrical distribution systems in a similar sized or larger municipal electric systems is preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge
Considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, policies and practices related to the maintenance and construction of an electric utility system.
Considerable knowledge of the equipment and tools used in electric utility maintenance work.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions required in electric utility maintenance work.
Skills & Abilities
Ability to perform electric utility line maintenance and construction work at a full journeyman level.
Ability to use and care for equipment and tools used in electric utility maintenance and construction operations.
Ability and skill in the operation of a backhoe, aerial bucket truck, boom truck, and similar automotive equipment and machinery.
Ability to perform work in a conscientious manner and must be dedicated to improving the services offered by the electric utility.
Ability to perform work in a safe manner, follow safe work procedures, and take necessary safety precautions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform relatively heavy manual work.
Ability to deal tactfully with the general public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid Journeyman Lineman’s card from the Union recognized by the City.
Possession of a valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire; a Class A CDL permit must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.
Must reside within 16 miles of Batavia city limits within one (1) year of employment with the City and assignment to the Electric Division.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and regularly lift and/or move 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and slippery surfaces, humid conditions, extreme cold and heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
