Description
This crucial role involves a diverse range of technical duties, including conducting inspections of
commercial and residential buildings at various construction and remodeling stages to verify
adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. The position also entails examining
plans and specifications for new construction, additions, and alterations to residential and
commercial properties to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, rules, and
regulations, as well as inspecting existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy,
or ongoing code compliance.
Maintaining accurate files, records, and reports related to inspection and plan review activities
is also a key responsibility. Furthermore, the Building Inspector will confer with and provide clear
and helpful information to architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in
both field and office settings, explain and interpret applicable codes and regulations effectively,
attend and participate in relevant meetings, stay informed about new trends and innovations in
building inspection and plan examination practices, and perform other duties as assigned to
support the department's mission.
This position demands critical thinking, problem-solving skills, sound judgment, initiative, and
discretion, along with a commitment to continuous learning and process improvement.
Requirements
Candidates must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and a minimum of five years
of experience in the trades and/or general construction; relevant combinations of experience,
training, and education will be considered.
The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge of building construction principles and
practices, a significant understanding of a variety of building and construction materials and their
appropriate uses, and thorough knowledge of building, plumbing, and zoning codes. While
International Code Council (ICC) certifications are preferred, the successful candidate will be
required to obtain the ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification (B1) within one year of
appointment; additional certifications may be required based on inspection assignments.
Essential skills include excellent verbal and written communication, with the ability to interact
with the public in a courteous and professional manner, strong organizational skills and the ability
to prioritize and complete required duties accurately and in a timely manner, a detail-oriented
approach, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Candidates should also
possess a working knowledge of web-based computer software programs, proficiency in
Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and comfort and ability to use a tablet for field work.
A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.
